PREFECTURE / CRETAN STATE

The Prefecture's building was used as a palace by Prince George II, the first High Commissioner of the Cretan State (1898-1913). During the transition stage between Ottoman domination and the Cretan State, the administration of Rethymnon was taken over by the Russians. In the Museum of Education the "Cretan State Code" is exhibited, a set of laws that defined the operation of the State. In addition, Russian coins with the form of Catherine of Russia and currencies of the Cretan State with the form of the High Commissioner (1901) on them are also exhibited, which were used to give the first salaries of Christian and Muslim teachers of the city. We head towards the Pedagogical Academy of Heraklion.
